Story: The TARDIS materializes in England yet again, this time at the railway station of Cranleigh Halt in June 1925. Tegan is charmed by the quaint era, while Nyssa and Adric find it faintly confusing, but the three of them set off to have a look round. No sooner have they left the railway station than they are intercepted by a chauffeur who mistakes the Doctor for a cricketer he has been told to expect. To her mild annoyance, Nyssa finds herself the focus of his gaze.

The four travellers are taken to the stately home of Lord Cranleigh, where an annual benefit ball is being held. The Doctor is quickly drafted into service at the cricket game, where his bowling and batting skills lead his team to victory. Meanwhile, Nyssa discovers why she has been the object of such scrutiny - it appears that she is the spitting image of Ann Talbot, fiancée to Charles Cranleigh. Ann had once been engaged to Charles' older brother George, a famous botanist and explorer, but when George disappeared on one of his many trips to the Orinoco river region, Ann eventually gave up hope for his return.

As Ann and Nyssa mischievously disguise themselves so that no-one can tell them apart, Adric feasts at the buffet and Tegan puts to use her skill at dancing the Charleston. But, unbeknownst to the merrymakers, a malevolent creature lurks in the upper storeys of the house. While the Doctor is trapped trying to navigate the many secret passages of Cranleigh Hall, it attends the ball in his costume. Its fixation on Ann means that Nyssa may end up in its disfigured clutches...and it is not afraid to kill.
