Story: Tegan wishes to pay a visit to her grandfather, so the Doctor directs the TARDIS to the quaint English village of Little Hodcombe in 1984. But the usually pleasant town has turned frighteningly sinister. The entire village has been sealed off from the outside world by Sir George Hutchinson, who is orchestrating a series of war games to celebrate the anniversary of the Civil War battle that took place in the town.

But Sir George is taking the games far too seriously, and they have escalated from innocent entertainment into something very dangerous indeed. The Doctor, Tegan and Turlough are taken into custody simply for walking around the town. Tegan manages to escape, but when she follows a mysterious figure into an abandoned building, she sees sparkling lights in the darkness and an ethereal, yet threatening, figure appears in front of her eyes.

Sir George wants Tegan to be the town's May Queen - but Sir George is re-enacting the original battle exactly, and in that bloody version, the May Queen is burned at the stake. Even worse, a powerful being is stirring within the church. As it gains power, the wall begins to crack and psychic forces begin to manifest within the village. Why has Tegan's grandfather disappeared? What is causing Sir George's homicidal fanaticism? And if left unchecked, will the force in the church succeed in causing horrible bloodshed throughout Little Hodcombe?
