Story: In Shoreditch, London, 1963, a group of army men fight an unseen menace in a warehouse. Whatever the enemy is, it has a death ray, and it has already killed one man. Into the melée come the Doctor and Ace, and the Doctor has his suspicions about what is hiding in the warehouse. When a Dalek emerges, guns blazing, his suspicions are confirmed.

The Doctor realizes that the Daleks have come to 1963 London to retrieve the Hand of Omega, which he left behind on Earth during his visit with Susan. Noticing spacecraft scorch marks in the playground of Coal Hill School, the Doctor takes Ace there to investigate. In the cellar is a transmat, capable of bringing a Dalek war fleet to the planet. The Doctor disables it, but in doing so, he incurs the wrath of the local Dalek operator...and escape will not be so simple, for now the Daleks can ascend stairs.

And matters are even more complicated, for there are two factions of Daleks converging on Earth. A band of renegade Daleks, led by a Dalek Supreme, is determined to get control of the Hand of Omega. And the Imperial Daleks, led by the Emperor, are equally determined to get the Hand for their own purposes. A Dalek war threatens to catch the Earth in its crossfire, and the humans are helpless to prevent it...for if they try to attack, the Imperial mothership can crack Earth open like an egg...
