Story: Before the Doctor takes Martha back home, he decides to give her a glimpse of the future as well. The year 5,000,000,053 fits the bill, and the place is the city of New New York. Martha is underwhelmed by the city's rainy, seedy appearance, but before she gets a chance to do much looking around, she is abducted right before the Doctor's eyes, bustled into a car and taken onto the freeway. Her kidnappers assure her that they mean her no harm - they simply needed three passengers in their car to be able to use the fast lane. The Doctor, hot in pursuit, stumbles onto the freeway to discover miles and miles of backed-up hovercars, stacked lane upon lane, with exhaust fumes strong enough to choke him.

To their horror, the Doctor and Martha discover that the motorway has been gridlocked as long as anyone can remember. In a world where it can take years to travel but a few miles, some people have been on the motorway for over twenty years. Mysteriously, all of the exits seem to be closed, but surely it's just a matter of time before they re-open? Even more disturbing, there are reports of cars disappearing, never to be seen again... and if the odd rumblings echoing around the fast lane aren't the sound of ventilation shafts, then they lend credence to the rumour that there are hungry creatures lurking in the fumes...
