Story: Curious about their unusual student Susan, who exhibits astonishing knowledge in some subject areas and an embarrassing lack in others, history teacher Barbara Wright and science teacher Ian Chesterton follow her home one evening. To their surprise, 76 Totters Lane turns out not to be a lovely two-story house, but a junkyard. Upon further investigation, they stumble upon an out-of-place police box and hear Susan's voice inside. The two teachers barge past Susan's irritated grandfather and enter the tiny police box, and to their shock, the interior is many times bigger than the exterior.

Now that they have learned Susan's secret, her grandfather - the Doctor - refuses to let them out, for fear that they will tell others. Instead, informing them that the police box is really a craft that travels in time and space, he activates it. Within moments, Ian and Barbara find themselves on prehistoric Earth.

They are soon captured by a tribe of primitives who want them to divulge the secret of fire. Between facing the possibility of a violent death, and trying to win the trust of a man who wants nothing to do with them, can Ian and Barbara make it back to the Ship and the possibility of getting safely back home?
