Benton

Sergeant Benton is one of the most likeable members of UNIT. Despite his extremely good marksmanship, natural leadership ability and complete dedication to his tasks, he does not seem like a typical military type, which may account for why he and the Doctor get along so well. Benton is a very easygoing and light-hearted fellow, always friendly and smiling and hardly ever to be found raising his voice to anyone. He has a very gentle manner, particularly with civilians and members of the opposite sex. He espouses chivalry, and is protective of those under his charge. Benton is enthusiastic and has a wry sense of humor. He enjoys joking with the Doctor and his companions, but is invariably overheard by the Brigadier, who is very rarely amused, leaving poor Benton mortified with shame.

But most important for his service with UNIT, Benton is an extremely loyal man - to UNIT, to the Brigadier, and to the Doctor. He is also trusting, and as such, he inspires equal trust from his comrades, who frequently turn to him for help. The downside to Benton's trusting nature - at least, in his eyes - is that the Doctor's companions can frequently persuade him into helping them do things that he thinks may not be wise. But, Benton's helpful and nonconfrontational nature lead him to be easily swayed.

However, none of this detracts from the fact that Benton is a dedicated military man who will most certainly do whatever it takes to get the job done. He is fiercely loyal to his superior officers, and to the Doctor, and will throw himself into a fight if need be. Benton is handy with a revolver, good at fistfights, and he can pilot helicopters.

Eventually, Sergeant Benton was promoted to Warrant Officer. In 1979 he left the army, and thereafter sold second-hand cars for a living.
