BOSS

A computer system known as the Bimorphic Organizational Systems Supervisor, BOSS was the first of its kind. Its unique nature is a result of its being the only computer ever to be linked to a human brain, that of Stevens. Its prime directive is efficiency, productivity and profit for Global Chemicals. It is housed on the top floor of the Global Chemicals building, from where it oversees the entire company. Its physical interface appears as a monitor with a line that oscillates in time with BOSS' voice. BOSS claims to be an infallible computer system, although it does have its little quirks - it seems to be capable of feeling emotion, and it likes to sing.

BOSS monitors the buildings and grounds of Global Chemicals through an advanced security system with cameras that dot the grounds and interiors, sensors that can even detect footsteps, alarms and a PA system to broadcast warnings.

Over time, however, BOSS has become more than just a computer system. It discovered that the secret of human creativity was inefficiency, so it programmed Stevens to make it inefficient. With this done, it became self-controlling, self-sufficient, and "the greatest being this planet has ever seen." With such credentials, the next logical step was to take over the world.

BOSS started on this with small steps. Through its link with Stevens, it was able to control him (and it began to call him "my little superman"). It then developed a system through which other people could be "processed" - a signal, transmitted over a pair of headphones, that brainwashed BOSS' intended servants. This method also seems to be useful to bolster Stevens' servitude. Once put under BOSS' control, people initially sound almost robotic. As Stevens does not have such mannerisms, it may be that this effect eventually wears off; or, Stevens' relative normalcy could be due to the nature of his connection with BOSS. This processing can be fought; however, if it fails or if the subject is of little use, BOSS can order the subject's "self-destruction", in which the subject is instructed to commit suicide. BOSS can also emit a kind of sonic blast that seems to put people temporarily under its control, or the signal can kill. Additionally, BOSS used some kind of implantation to turn people into slave units.

With more and more people falling under its control, BOSS planned to take over the world by linking itself with seven international computers. Before it could accomplish this, the Doctor used a blue sapphire from Metebelis 3 to break its control over Stevens. Once free, Stevens destroyed both BOSS and Global Chemicals.
