Story: The TARDIS brings the Doctor, Ben and Polly to a cave by a rocky Cornish beach. Ben doesn't understand how they got there, but he doesn't want to be in Cornwall, and sets off to find a train that will take him back to London and his ship. Polly and the Doctor follow, and the trio soon happen upon a church where they are greeted by a man in seventeenth-century clothing. The Doctor talks to the church warden about finding an inn for the night, and before they depart, the man tells the Doctor an intriguing, but senseless, riddle.

Shortly after the TARDIS crew finds the inn, news comes to the landlord that the warden has been murdered, and naturally the Doctor, Ben and Polly are suspects. But actually, the warden was murdered by the first mate of a pirate ship whose captain was aware that he knew the location of some very valuable buried treasure. Unfortunately for the pirates, the warden is killed before he can reveal the clue to the treasure's location - but the pirates suspect that he may have told the Doctor.

While the Doctor is kidnapped by a spike-handed pirate, Ben and Polly stumble upon a dangerous smuggling ring. The pirates will stop at nothing to see that they possess the hidden treasure, and it is up to the Doctor and his companions to bring the outlaws to justice - or to find the treasure first.
