Exiled to Earth with a disabled TARDIS and his knowledge to fix it wiped, the third Doctor was forced to make the best of a bad situation. In order to occupy himself, he took on a position as UNIT's scientific advisor and helped them repel numerous alien invasions from Earth. But the Doctor was never satisfied with this life; he despised working under constraints and particularly having to answer to someone. A healthy disrespect for authority was very manifest in the third Doctor's personality, often causing sparks to fly between him and his friend Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.
The third Doctor is very much a father figure for his companions, particularly Jo. He is always caring and kind toward them, except perhaps during the difficult initial period of adjustment when they often receive several stern lectures. He generally has a wry temperament, taking everything in stride with a twinkle in his eye. When startled, the third Doctor makes use of a wide range of colorful expressions. He also likes to break into song from time to time, usually while he works.
The third Doctor is very much a man of action. Unlike his predecessors, he does not hesitate to throw himself into a fight. He does not often use his fists, although he is very capable of doing so if need be; if he cannot disarm his opponents quickly, he makes use of his skills in Venusian aikido. The Doctor is one of the few beings to have mastered this martial art, designed as it is for creatures with five arms. He is also an adept fencer, and golfer.
This Bond-like mentality also extends itself to the third Doctor's love of gadgets. He made extensive modifications to his yellow roadster, Bessie, making it very much unlike any other car on the road - for one thing, it has a superdrive with brakes that work by the absorption of inertia! A flying hovercraft, motorcycles, helicopters and motorboats are just a few of the other machines that the Doctor relished during his time on Earth. The third Doctor seems also to have inherited his predecessor's love of disguises, and every once in a while he will try his hand at it, as well.
His flamboyant personality also, of course, turned up in his dress style. The third Doctor usually wears a ruffled shirt and a jacket, occasionally with a silk cape. His outfits are variously colored with bright magentas, violets, greens, reds or blues. Hidden under the sleeves and rarely revealed is a dragon tattoo on his right arm.
