the fourth Doctor

The fourth Doctor is the most amusing and whimsical of all the Time Lord's incarnations. His wild, curly hair, boggling eyes and toothy grin make an immediate impression, and his personality is no less unique.

This Doctor's greatest weapon is what his enemies like to call "playing the fool" (as in "Stop playing the fool, Doctor!"). When confronted with a megalomaniacal villain or threatened with torture, the fourth Doctor's immediate impulse is to fall back on humor. He makes jokes about the situation, often baiting his enemy in the process. Usually this enrages his opponent and gives the Doctor time to think or reveals a weakness he can exploit. His laid-back, nonthreatening manner can trick his enemy into letting down his guard, at which point the Doctor can leap into action and escape.

In any dangerous situation, the Doctor's flippancy and humor are immediately evident, sometimes worrying his companions that he is not taking things seriously enough. But this flippancy can be replaced in the blink of an eye by an extreme seriousness, usually when a situation is so desperate that the Doctor needs every ounce of concentration he can muster. In situations like this, the fourth Doctor becomes easily irritated by his companions and may snap at them or order them about. Usually they realize by his manner how serious the situation is, and manage not to be offended. The Doctor has little respect for fools, and even less patience with them. He is even more likely to raise his voice to people he considers stupid than he is with his companions. In fact, his temper can manifest itself quite suddenly, marking a strong contrast with the otherwise easygoing Doctor. He absolutely despises being wrong (and makes valiant attempts to cover up when it turns out that he was, in fact, in error) and being told what to do, even helpful suggestions (in which case he scoffs at the suggestion until it proves to be wise, at which point he will either grudgingly acknowledge it, pretend he never objected to it in the first place, or claim credit for the idea himself!).

The fourth Doctor seems to carry around an incredible number of odds and ends. His pockets seem to be dimensionally transcendental like the TARDIS, and emptying them out uncovers all manner of bizarre items. One of these is a yo-yo, which the Doctor likes to use to test the local gravity. He is also never to be found without a bag of jelly babies, which he offers to friend and foe alike, often with strange results!

A long coat and floppy, wide-brimmed hat make up the fourth Doctor's costume, but nothing characterizes him as much as his incredibly long woolen scarf. Often as practical as it is decorative, the scarf is a frequent victim of destructive weapons and has even been accused of murder!
