Of all the Doctor's regenerations, the fifth is the most pleasant and easygoing. He has a laid-back demeanor, an inoffensive manner, a calm nature and a ready smile. The fifth Doctor charms his way into situations rather than bullying or blustering. His unassuming behavior means that he can blend into the background much easier than before.
This is not to say, though, that he is wimpy or a pushover. In fact, the fifth Doctor has a bit of the first Doctor in him, and he can be quite stern when the situation requires it. He is not against standing firmly up to villains and giving them a good dressing-down, and in a way it is more shocking when the fifth Doctor gets upset because it so contradicts his general nature. He can also hold his own quite well in arguments, which often arise with Tegan or Adric, and he can become quite petulant if the mood strikes him. But these times are few and far between, and he quickly regrets any rash words said in the heat of the moment.
Concern for others' well-being is manifested more than usual in the fifth Doctor's persona. The slightest hint of peril to his companions' lives can put him into a rage like few other things. And more than other Doctors, the fifth is highly disturbed when events lead to the destruction of an enemy that he would just as soon have sent packing unharmed.
Generally, when entering a new situation, the fifth Doctor tends to err on the side of caution. He is wary of barging into places where he does not belong, preferring instead to learn as much about the situation as he can, or avoid it altogether if it is particularly dangerous. But when the need arises - imminent danger or a threat to someone's life chief among them - he transforms from a calm, cautious man to a blur of frantic energy. When such moments occur, the Doctor becomes extremely focused and almost breathless, barking out rapid explanations or commands while he hurries to accomplish what needs to be done. If he fails, he tends to regard the situation with bleak resignation until an idea occurs to him.
The fifth Doctor has a penchant for cricket, as reflected in his clothing. Along with the cricketer's uniform, he wears a long beige coat with red trim and a matching hat that can be rolled up for easy carrying. Attached to the Doctor's left lapel is a stick of celery, which turns purple in the presence of gases in the praxis range of the spectrum - the fifth Doctor has apparently developed an allergy to them, an affliction which disappears along with his regeneration. Celery is also a powerful restorative for Gallifreyans, although its effects on humans are significantly less dramatic.
