Story: The Doctor's companions, particularly Ben, are finding his sudden transformation into a completely different person to be rather difficult to accept. But they hardly have any time to get used to the change; the Doctor has barely finished putting together his new wardrobe when he zips outside the TARDIS in search of new adventure, dragging Ben and Polly along for the ride.

They find themselves on the inhospitable mercury-laden planet of Vulcan, where the Doctor stumbles across the body of the recently-murdered Earth Examiner. The Doctor is attacked by the murderer, who takes away the body...and when the Doctor and his companions are found by the planet's colonists, he is mistaken for the Examiner and allowed access to the entire colony. Naturally, the Doctor makes use of this straightaway, and as soon as he, Ben and Polly start snooping, they make a terrible discovery.

The colony's scientist, Lesterson, has taken in a spaceship that was found crashed on the planet's surface, and when the Doctor secretly manages to open it, he finds two Daleks inside...and a gap where there should have been a third. Lesterson has secretly been experimenting on the third Dalek, and despite the Doctor's warnings, he manages to revive it. But gradually, his elation turns to worry and then to fear...because while the Dalek professes servitude to Lesterson and the other colonists, it is acting behind his back to revive its comrades and eradicate the colony...
