Story: After yet another confrontation with Ian and Barbara, the Doctor decides that at their next landing, he is going to send them on their way - and that next landing amazingly turns out to be twentieth-century England, or so the Doctor claims. Ian invites them to have a drink together before parting ways, and the Doctor and Susan accept.
They depart the TARDIS and run into a scared boy. They manage to learn from him that they are near Paris before he runs off. Understandably suspicious that they have, in fact, landed in the proper time, they continue into the forest where they find an empty house. The TARDIS crew begins to explore the house looking for clues to their current location. Barbara is shocked to realize that they have arrived in France during the Reign of Terror when they find eighteenth-century clothes and papers bearing Robespierre's signature.
Unfortunately, the farmhouse is not as empty as it seemed - it is the current hiding place of two royalists. The house is soon surrounded by soldiers of Robespierre's regime - Ian, Barbara and Susan are taken captive while the Doctor is left to burn in the farmhouse. When they are sentenced to die by guillotine and thrown into prison, they must try to overcome the despair of their situation, escape their bonds, and find one another before they are all killed.
