Jackie (née Jacqueline Andrea Suzette Prentice) is the mother of companion Rose Tyler, with whom she lives in a London flat on the Powell Estate. Jackie is pretty young at heart and has a close relationship with her daughter, who she frequently calls "sweetheart". Her primary concern, particularly when Rose begins travelling with the Doctor, is for Rose's safety. Aside from Rose, Jackie's main interest seems to be money; specifically, money that takes as little effort as possible to acquire. She plays the lottery, and looks for potential lawsuits and compensation whenever possible.
Jackie married Peter Alan Tyler (born 15 September 1954), a dreamer with lots of ideas for not-so-brilliant inventions, who took odd jobs to provide for his family. The marriage was a bad one; Jackie regarded Pete as a failure, and suspected him (possibly with good reason) of having affairs behind her back. But on the way to the wedding of Stuart Hoskins and Sarah Clark on 7 November 1987, Pete was delayed picking up a wedding present (a rather tacky vase), and while crossing Jordan Road on the way to the church, he was killed by a hit-and-run driver. Jackie apparently came to appreciate his better qualities after his death; she kept his possessions and painted a glowing picture of him to Rose.
Jackie has a flamboyant personality, sometimes coming across as shallow, and is prone to exaggeration. She can be fairly flirtatious, even with men she has never met (possibly as a ploy to get what she wants). Sometimes she seems to be lost in her own world, not paying particular attention to what's going on around her, unless the situation turns serious.
When Rose disappeared for a year, Jackie frantically posted flyers around the estate, and was strongly suspicious that Mickey had murdered her, yet in an attempt to project an air of normalcy, told her relatives that Rose was working as an au pair in France.
Jackie is initially very mistrustful of the Doctor, particularly after he steals Rose away from her for a year; but as he repeatedly saves the world from danger, and she sees his determination to keep his promise and protect Rose, her respect for him increases.
