Story: Earth in the far future is a difficult place to live. Advances in food technology led to greater efficiency in growing crops and a larger, healthier population, which in turn led to the need for more and larger towns. With the Earth's plant life kept to a bare minimum, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels decreased. The Earth could no longer hold on to its heat. And one year, spring never came.
When the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria arive, the Earth is poised on the brink of a new ice age. The poles have begun to spread out across the earth, and the resultant glaciers threaten to wipe out 5,000 years of civilization. In order to stop them, ionization bases have been set up on each continent to boost the Earth's heat...but the station in Britain is failing, and if it is wiped out by glaciers, Europe will soon follow. With the balance of power shifted, the other ionization bases will fall, and the entire Earth will be destroyed. Fortunately for the entire world, the Doctor has a few tricks up his sleeve that might just keep the base from being crushed by the oncoming wall of ice.
But what no-one anticipates is the discovery of a creature buried in the glacier. And not just any creature - an alien, from Mars, whose spacecraft and crew have been frozen in the glacier since the first ice age. Once freed, they decide that the Earth is ripe for colonization...and as they are intolerant of the heat, the freezing climate is perfect for their plans. Trapped between a force of nature and the aliens who want to hasten it along, can the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria prevent human civilization from being scraped off the face of the planet?
