Story: The TARDIS materializes in the middle of the Crusades, as a band of Saracens prepare to attack King Richard the Lionheart. Naturally, Ian and Barbara stumble directly into danger - while Ian and the Doctor are busy fighting off one Saracen, Barbara is quietly bundled away by another. By the time the Doctor, Ian and Vicki realize she is gone, it is too late.

While the Doctor attempts to find and win the confidence of the King, Barbara finds herself imprisoned in the lair of the Sultan along with William des Preaux, who is posing as the King in order to keep his ruler safe. He suggests that Barbara pose as the King's sister Joanna, and although Barbara would rather try to get back to her friends immediately, she agrees.

When the deception is discovered, Barbara's only hope is to serve as a storyteller in the Sultan's court. Unless the TARDIS crew can rescue her quickly, torture or death could lie around the next corner. But Ian doubts that he alone can rescue her, and the King has far more important things to consider...
