Gods of Ragnarok

The Gods of Ragnarok appear as tall stone beings, with flowing stone robes and helmeted heads bearing an eye symbol in the center of the forehead. It is not clear where exactly in space and time they exist, although it seems likely that they operate from the planet Segonax in the distant past or, given their name, the far future. They sit high above a dusty circus ring in an amphitheatre known as the Dark Circus, where they lure people of individuality and imagination and wear them down to nothingness in their service. The Gods of Ragnarok live to be entertained, by the suffering of mortals if nothing else is available. Their command is "Entertain us...or die." As long as they are being entertained, the person in the ring is safe...but as soon as the Gods stop being entertained, the person in the ring dies. Nor are the Gods easy to please - they demand bigger and better entertainment, and right away, so a rousing performance will only please them momentarily and delay death briefly.

Kingpin, a member of the Psychic Circus, learned about the Gods and persuaded the others to go to Segonax with him. Once there, Kingpin found a series of stone caverns, with a glowing blue moon symbol guarding the entrance and an eerie green light illuminating the passages. Within the caverns was a well with a shining blue light at the bottom; Kingpin used an eye-shaped medallion to summon the Gods, who first enslaved Kingpin, then the rest of the circus folk, and turned the Psychic Circus into a trap. The eyeball in the center of the medallion was removed, leaving Kingpin a babbling idiot, then hidden in the circus' hippie bus and guarded by a killer robot conductor.

The Gods of Ragnarok were able to exist concurrently in two time spaces. Within the tent of the Psychic Circus, they appeared as a father, mother and little girl, all dressed in 1940s-style clothing, who sat in the stands and watched the entertainment in the ring. The center ring of the Psychic Circus was apparently built around the same memorial stones as formed the Gods' ring in the Dark Circus. Would-be performers were lured to the Circus with the promise of a talent contest, then forced to enter the ring and perform for their lives. Their performances were ranked by the Gods, who held up cards bearing numbers from zero to ten. The better the act, the higher the number and the longer they lasted. But when the Gods tired of them, they had but to hold up a card with a zero. A bright light and thunderclap followed, and the competitor would be reduced to a shred of clothing and a pile of dust.

The circus folk coped with this change in various ways. Some, like the Chief Clown, were determined to survive at any cost and began avidly serving the Gods. Others, like Morgana, served them reluctantly and were miserable doing it. Some rebelled, and were destroyed. In order to keep them all in line, the Gods required that their eye symbol be added to the kites made by Flowerchild. These kites were then used to patrol the skies and ensure that no-one tried to escape. The Gods were apparently able to establish telepathic communication with the circus members, also using Morgana's crystal ball as an aid.

In the Dark Circus, the Gods of Ragnarok do communicate with one another through speech, but if they wish to carry on a private conversation, they can do so by raising a hand. Energy crackles between the hands of the communicating Gods, presumably carrying the message. The Gods have the ability to bring people back from the dead. They can fire green energy bolts from their fingers or from the eye symbols on their heads. The Gods can also channel energy through their human forms, causing their eyes to glow, and this can apparently be used as a weapon, as well.

In addition, the Gods can establish a bridge between the two time spaces to allow people to cross over. The Doctor, having fought the Gods of Ragnarok all through time and not about to stop on Segonax, entered the Dark Circus this way. Once there, he proceeded to entertain them, buying time while Kingpin and Ace recovered the eyeball of the medallion. When the eyeball was placed back on the medallion, Kingpin's mind returned. The Gods, able to sense the presence of the medallion, became worried and tried to stop Kingpin from reaching the well, which served as a portal to the Dark Circus. Once there, Kingpin and Ace were able to send the medallion through the portal to the Doctor, who used it to reflect the Gods' energy bolts back at them. They were apparently destroyed as their Dark Circus crumbled to bits, while in the other time zone, the main tent of the Psychic Circus collapsed in a ray of pink energy.
