Romana's decision to regenerate was apparently based solely on vanity. She had not been mortally wounded and forced to renew her body, but she felt it was time for a change. Romana cycled through several forms - a short, blue, aquatic-looking woman; a tall Greek goddess in gold brassiere and fuzzy boa ("No thank you, not today" says the Doctor); and an immensely tall Greek goddess in a long white gown - but none were favored by the Doctor. Finally she settled on her personal favorite - a copy of the body of Princess Astra of Atrios. The Doctor found something slightly inconsiderate about this, but Romana was not bothered.
As with the Doctor, her regeneration brought about a significant personality change. Romana retained her haughty, aristocratic air, but it was much softened by her new sense of humor, lighthearted demeanor and ready smile. The new Romana meshed more easily with the style of the fourth Doctor, and together they made an unstoppable team. But when she was crossed, Romana did not hesitate to unleash the brunt of her anger on the deserving recipient.
The second Romana is a Time Lady of much initiative and resourcefulness, even going so far as to create her own sonic screwdriver, and one better than the Doctor's. Romana is not afraid to investigate her own leads and operate much like the Doctor, confronting the enemy and figuring out the best way to defeat it. Her methods are still not quite as unorthodox as the Doctor's, but they work very well together. She can stop her hearts (a trick she was taught at the Academy).
Romana is tall, with long straight blonde hair and green eyes. She is fond of wearing very unique outfits, such as a pink copy of the Doctor's clothing, a schoolgirl's uniform, riding gear, or a Victorian bathing outfit reminiscent of a sailor's uniform.
Romana was summoned back to Gallifrey just before the TARDIS entered E-Space, and when the Doctor finally found a way back to Normal-Space, Romana could not bear to return to her home planet. Instead, she stayed with the damaged K-9, determined to help fight the Tharil slave trade.
