Steven Taylor

Steven Taylor is an astronaut and space pilot from Earth's future, some centuries before the year 4000. When his ship crashlanded on the planet Mechanus, he wandered around in the jungle for days until he was captured by the robotic Mechanoids. Steven found himself virtually their prisoner for two years until the TARDIS crew arrived and helped him to escape. After fleeing the city, Steven stumbled into the TARDIS and thus became part of the Doctor's team.

Steven is accompanied on his travels by a toy panda bear mascot named Hi-Fi. It was his only possession during his years on Mechanus, and Steven even went back into the burning city to save Hi-Fi. This kind of action is typical of Steven's general personality: he often lets his emotions get the better of him, being ruled by his heart rather than his head. Not only is he brave, he is also stubborn and hard-headed. When he sets his mind to do something, or against something, he is very hard to sway. In fact, Steven can be positively argumentative, and he does not shy away from vocally expressing his opinions, which are usually strong. With Ian no longer a member of the TARDIS crew, Steven takes over his role as the one most likely to get into a fight - although this probably has something to do with Steven's general bull-headedness, as well!

But this is only the negative side of Steven's determination, and he has quite a few equivalent positive qualities to balance them out. Steven is very bold, and will quickly take charge of a situation that needs some leadership. And when Steven feels the need to fight for something, he will do it in an impassioned manner - with either his fists or his words. His honest, forthright personality makes him the kind of person that inspires trust in others. Steven has a wry sense of humor, which often manifests itself under duress and sometimes helps him defuse tense situations.

The Doctor frequently gets annoyed at Steven's habit of calling him "Doc", and Steven makes a genuine effort to curb this tendency. Steven is very protective of his fellow travelling companions, which is understandable since most of them are younger and more naïve than he is. He is also quite an inquisitive person, and in this sense, he and Vicki get along extremely well. But unlike Vicki, Steven isn't bothered by heights, and in fact he enjoys climbing. Steven is quite a good, if modest, singer (tenor, apparently) and he may also have some piano-playing ability. He is also a talented builder, and he was able to use this ability to keep himself sane while he was trapped on Mechanus. In fact, the staircase that he built to the roof was instrumental in helping him escape.

Steven is of average height, with dark brown hair that he seems to keep immaculately coiffed, and hazel or brown eyes. He is fond of wearing turtlenecks and collared shirts, trousers and a jacket. He carries around a device like a pocketknife, which he can use to pick locks.

With all of his natural leadership qualities, it comes as no surprise that when Steven finally decided it was time to leave the TARDIS crew, he did so in order to lead an entire planet, bringing together two groups of people that had been at odds with one another.
