Story: The Doctor is delighted with the TARDIS materializes in sixteenth-century France, and decides to take advantage of the opportunity to meet scientist Charles Preslin while Steven does some sightseeing. But as soon as they have split up, Steven spies a man following the Doctor. Unable to warn him in time, Steven accepts an offer of aid from a local man, Nicholas Muss, but first - a drink!
Steven learns that the TARDIS has placed them down in the middle of a brewing conflict between the Protestants and Huguenots in France. He and Nicholas then encounter a serving girl, fleeing for her life and terrified for the lives of her families. She fears that the Catholics intend to wipe out all of the Huguenots in her home town. Meanwhile, the Doctor has found Preslin, who informs him that the Abbot of Amboise is coming to Paris to fight heresy - which includes apothecaries as well as Huguenots. The Doctor wishes to speak with the Abbot - but little does he know that the Abbot bears a remarkable resemblance to the Doctor himself.
With suspicion mounting all around and powerful figures trying to stop him, Steven must foil an assassination plot. But the Doctor has vanished - or is he posing as the Abbot of Amboise? And can Steven rescue his friends from the Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve or are they all destined to die?
