3 May 1997 Doctor Who - Mutanty on the Shchedrost starring the second Doctor, Ian Chesterton and Grant Markham abates (abates@wn.planet.gen.nz) - Doc2 Benjamin (chrisben@icok.net) - KGBRamichov DrGrace (judiang@idt.net) - First_Mate_Ivanova GailPolly (gailpolly@icu.com) - Cleanerov Haem (haem@lys.vnet.net) - Dmitri, TheKnife Jefferys (j_eng@lvc.edu) - Shostakov Jondar (jondar@fl.net.au) - GrantMarkham RafflesOG (raffles@linknet.net) - Capt_Rafflesovich trinalin (trinalin@infinet.com) - The_TARDIS, Ian_Chesterton -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The setting: A Russian fishing ship on the coast of Russia. The time is 1972. Tension between the Soviet Union and America is still high. The crew have been out for three months. However, the fish they are catching are mutated. Many are dead already. Several have three eyes, missing fins, and missing gills... ***** * Dmitri watches the fishing net trailing behind the large Russian boat, wondering what it will bring up this time * KGBRamichov helps Dmitri Comrade, I fear we will not make our quota! * Dmitri grimaces as he and Ramichov work on bringing up the net You may be right...but we cannot think about that now. We just get more fish. * Capt_Rafflesovich walks up behind them. Bah! It was hardly worth setting to sea! You're right. We've hardly caught anything worth looking at, much less eating. I don't think the Captain knows what he is doing! * Dmitri looks at Ramichov I wouldn't - ah. Hello, captain. Captain?! You are too cynical, Ramichov. Um, well, you will agree, comrade Captain, this catch is poor. Da, all the fish have strange-looking scales...and more. We will make our quota. *voice brittle as ice* won't we, Dmitri! Yes, Captain. Bah, I would not feed this to my worst enemy! It's obvious the Americans are doing this. Dmitri, must I report you to the politburo for insubordination? And you, Ramichov? No, Captain. Then don't question my abilities again. My apologies, Captain. Captain, with your permission... What, Dmitri? * Dmitri indicates the net, which is still swinging halfway up to the boat Da, khorasho. Spasiba. * Dmitri resumes pulling up the net * KGBRamichov whispers to other crew members that something MUST be done * Capt_Rafflesovich looks sharply at Ramichov. He does not like whispering or secrets on his boat * Capt_Rafflesovich never liked Ramichov. He has Cassius' "lean and hungry look!" * KGBRamichov glares at the Captain * Dmitri swings the latest catch over the side of the boat and sets it down * Dmitri bends down to examine the fish Well? The same as always. * Dmitri holds up a fish with two dorsal fins and a strangely-shaped tail Govno! * Dmitri tosses it back into the net Are any of them viable? Ha! As if! Ramichov! I can't say for sure, Captain. I will have to sort them later. * Dmitri dumps the fish into a holding bin * Capt_Rafflesovich wishes his first mate were here. Ivanova is the only one he can trust with his true feelings on the problem Keep up the work, men. We will meet our quota if everyone works together. * Dmitri salutes the captain * KGBRamichov grudgingly salutes * Capt_Rafflesovich returns their salutes, glaring at Ramichov under veiled lids * Dmitri turns back to the fish * KGBRamichov mumbles more to the crew We'll starve this winter! * Cleanerov cleans some of the lesser tainted fish for the commercial catch * KGBRamichov lurks off to consult with Cleanerov * Capt_Rafflesovich heads back towards the bridge, more worried than he appears! ***** * The_TARDIS appears on the deck, out of sight from the fishermen * Doc2 steps out of the TARDIS and looks around * Ian_Chesterton follows the Doctor Well, what a cold place this is. * GrantMarkham follows Ian and the Doctor Where's Grant... oh, there you are. Brrrrr, it's freezing here! * Doc2 locks the TARDIS door. Oh dear, we haven't landed on that one ship again, have we? I don't fancy being hit on the head again by a sailor. I should think not... No, this looks quite different, I think. Good. * GrantMarkham looks around * Doc2 walks over to look at the iron railing * Ian_Chesterton rubs his hands together Wish I was still wearing my sweater. Any idea where and _when_ we are, Doctor? Well, let's see, shall we? * Doc2 produces a device from his waistcoat * Doc2 zaps the railing Hmm, yes... Looks like sometime during the late sixties or early seventies, perhaps. * Ian_Chesterton looks over the railing to the sea * Ian_Chesterton inhales deeply I love the sea, you know. * KGBRamichov hears talking * KGBRamichov glances around the corner * KGBRamichov sees three people speaking in odd accents * GrantMarkham notices a man Doctor, someone is watching us. * KGBRamichov runs off Are they? * Ian_Chesterton turns to see no one * Doc2 looks around * Cleanerov is cleaning ze fish Are you sure it isn't your imagination? Yes, there was a man watching us, but he just left. Oh dear, perhaps we shouldn't hang around. * Doc2 fidgets Hmmmm. I don't like that. Why didn't he come up to us? Surely we would raise his suspicions. That's probably why he left in such a hurry. * GrantMarkham begins to follow the man * GrantMarkham wonders why the man was looking at him * Doc2 follows Grant. Then maybe we had better get back to the TARDIS before he rouses his mates. I think you may be right, Ian. * Ian_Chesterton heads over to the TARDIS while the Doctor gets Grant * Doc2 calls after Grant, _quietly_ Psst, Grant. * GrantMarkham turns and looks at the Doctor * GrantMarkham whispers What!?! It might be better for us to leave. I'm sure these nice people don't want to be bothered. OK, Doctor. * GrantMarkham takes one last look behind him and then walks back to the TARDIS * Doc2 toddles over to unlock the TARDIS * KGBRamichov glances at Grant * GrantMarkham feels as if he's being watched again Doctor, I'm being watched again...I hope it isn't any more Vardans... they gave me the creeps. * Doc2 fudges with the lock * Ian_Chesterton sees a bin near the TARDIS * Ian_Chesterton smells something foul Doctor - come look at this. Oh, what's that? All this rotting fish. Surely the crew has a better way to store them than this. * Doc2 toddles over to look at the fish * GrantMarkham looks at the fish * Ian_Chesterton reaches in and picks one up Doctor - this one has three eyes! Oh, my giddy aunt. Three eyes??? Earth fish normally only have two, don't they? This won't do... Well, that settles any question of us leaving. There are hundreds of them! All mutated. Indeed. Well, we should certainly investigate. * KGBRamichov calls over Cleanerov to come see the strangers * Cleanerov goes over to Ramichov Da, sir? * Cleanerov bows and scrapes to the crewmember Look at the stangers. They are the cause of the troubles! What could cause this many mutations, Doctor? Why, a great many things, I should think. Radiation...toxic waste...junk food... Junk food? What is that? It's a lot like toxic waste, Grant. Yes, I remember reading a journal article about how radiation mutates DNA. But we don't see that much mutation from simple background radiation. * Doc2 pulls a fish from the barrel. Hmm, three nostrils. * GrantMarkham is somewhat confused This is Earth...then why are the fish not like Earth fish? Perhaps there's been an accident. A nuclear accident? It could well be. And we haven't any anti-radiation pills, have we, Doctor? I think I have some in the TARDIS... I think we should return to the TARDIS before we get sick. * Cleanerov speaks quietly to Ramichov * Cleanerov and Ramichov form a plan... * GrantMarkham turns around and sees two people whispering We can blame the fish on these strangers. Doctor, two people are watching us now... * Doc2 looks around. Oh dear! * Ian_Chesterton turns around too We may be too late. * Cleanerov drops a curtsey to the officer Da, sir, I shall take care of it. * Cleanerov nods slowly and meaningfully to Ramichov Doctor, one of them is the man who was watching me earlier. I think we should move slowly and carefully to the TARDIS. I wonder why they haven't sounded the alarm? They may think we are stow-aways. * GrantMarkham carefully walks backwards towards the TARDIS * Ian_Chesterton scoots to the TARDIS Maybe they don't want to panic the rest of the crew. * Doc2 backs away towards the TARDIS. * GrantMarkham bumps into a lifeboat... it crashes to the deck * Cleanerov goes over towards strangers, and peers at the fish they've just been looking at * Cleanerov sees mutant fish VAT ISSS DISS? * KGBRamichov smiles evilly Doctor!! * Doc2 starts unlocking the TARDIS again. Zeez fish are no goood! * Ian_Chesterton shakes his head * Ian_Chesterton taps the Doctor on the shoulder I think we have some trouble. Yes, I can see that, Ian. Vhy you put them here! Vat you doing on ship? Spies! Ah, now, there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for this. * Cleanerov shakes a finger at the TARDIS crew * GrantMarkham looks at the two people, confused You vait here...I get others. * GrantMarkham whispers to the Doctor It was my fault... * Dmitri walks past, having finished storing the fish, and sees the argument Dmitri - we have found the spies! * Dmitri comes over Spies? Spies? Spies??? We're not spies! What do you mean, Ramichov? Strangers! The captain has strangers and spies on board! No, we're quite nice people, really. * Ian_Chesterton whispers to the Doctor You'd better lock the TARDIS again. I think you're right... * Dmitri looks at the Doctor, Ian and Grant * GrantMarkham looks back at Dmitri, slightly worried What are you doing here, then? Ah, that's not an easy thing to explain * Doc2 fumbles with the lock behind him. Um, we were... That is to say...just passing through...as it were... They are spies!!! * Dmitri frowns at the Doctor, who seems to be awfully agitated... And what are you doing with your hands? Erm, nothing, why do you ask? * Ian_Chesterton tries to distract Dmitri Well, our boat just capsized. I just managed to get us aboard your vessel. You are not wet. Well, we've been hiding here for a few hours. We weren't sure how your crew would react to us. * Doc2 finishes relocking the TARDIS. * Doc2 holds his hands up. * KGBRamichov whispers to the crew These are the cause of our troubles! They are in league with the Captain! * Dmitri looks at Ramichov again With the *Captain*? Ramichov, you overreact. Doctor...when are we going to England? In a few minutes, Grant. * GrantMarkham looks even more worried ENGLAND! They are spies! * Cleanerov goes to keptin and Ivanova * Cleanerov bows humbly Keptain! Sirs! Zere is problem over by fish crates, please go see! * Capt_Rafflesovich and FirstMate Ivanova join the group. Let us show them what we do to spies! * Cleanerov, standing with crew listening to Ramichov, nods at his words Ah, I don't think that will be necessary... Spies they may be, but they have no affiliation with - Captain! What is this about spies? * First_Mate_Ivanova stares at the strangers Spies!!! We're not spies!!! The Doctor told you that! Watch! The captain will defend the spies! I *shall* watch, and I tell you, if he does, there is a good reason for it. Why should I defend spies, Ramichov? * GrantMarkham tries to back away, but can't - the lifeboat is in his way * KGBRamichov incites several of the crew to advance on the TARDIS crew Oh dear. * KGBRamichov grabs Grant * Cleanerov and other fishcleaners murmur excitedly at the action Ack!! Help!! Doctor!! * Ian_Chesterton grabs the other side of Grant and pulls back * GrantMarkham struggles in the grip * GrantMarkham feels like a rope in an Agoran tug-of-war match There seems to be a slight misunderstanding here. * Doc2 tries to detach Grant. * Dmitri gets hold of Ian's arm * First_Mate_Ivanova whispers to the Captain What is this? What is going on here! Someone answer me! The crew is mutinying. And why is that, Ramichov? * First_Mate_Ivanova turns to the crew and tries to allay their fears These are the spies! Let us hang them off the yard arm! Or throw them in with the fish! * Dmitri laughs Now wait a second! You sound like one of those decadent American movies! Captain, you are unworthy! Unworthy? * Dmitri tries to cover this up Ramichov means that we are unworthy to serve under you! I heard what he said, Dmitri, and I want an answer! How, UNWORTHY? * Doc2 "oh dears" and wonders if he should intervene. * Cleanerov and fishcleaners willingly go along with mutiny * Cleanerov points at Grant * First_Mate_Ivanova listens to the group as she calms the crew We are not spies! * First_Mate_Ivanova returns to the group * GrantMarkham continues to struggle... * KGBRamichov pulls Grant into the middle of the mutineers Doctor!! Help!! * Capt_Rafflesovich glares at the three strangers. Who are these people! * GrantMarkham looks around, very worried and nervous LET US HANG THIS SPY! Hang??? Me??? * Doc2 tries to extract Grant. Now, there's been a little misunderstanding. Stand still! Everyone! * First_Mate_Ivanova turns to the crew and demands order We found bad feesh after zis man was over by the containers! We've had bad fish for weeks! * Dmitri is loyal to his captain * Ian_Chesterton has slipped away and is making his way below decks I'm sure you don't want to hang my young companion here. * GrantMarkham is jostled and hit by the mutineering crew * KGBRamichov grabs a rope and ties Grant's hands * GrantMarkham has his hands forced behind his back and tied up We must get to the bottom of this! Ramichov, take care what you demand! You surely can't think _we_ would want to place mutated fish on _your_ boat... * GrantMarkham looks pleadingly at the Doctor Maybe not, but we've been hauling up bad fish for weeks. * Dmitri looks at the Captain You think it possible that they are the cause of our bad fish? Oh dear... * Dmitri looks at the strangers in a new, even harsher, light * First_Mate_Ivanova glares at Dmitiri Of course not! How do you think they could mutate fish? With their bare hands? It looks very suspicious to have these people on board all of a sudden, at the height of our troubles! Really, do you really think we would be able to contaminate all of your fish? You could have dropped something into the water. But it would dilute! Who knows how long you have been hiding aboard this ship? You are spies, and capable of anything! Ramichov! This is not your place! * First_Mate_Ivanova whispers to the Captain. Sir, we need to get the crew in hand and take this below deck. * KGBRamichov pushes Grant below deck Move, you! * GrantMarkham is forced below deck Captain, have you seen any large vessels nearby recently? * Capt_Rafflesovich agrees with Ivanova. Take them to the bridge! I'll deal with them there! * Doc2 fidgets and worries. Sir, I suggest you speak with the crew and allay their fears. * First_Mate_Ivanova barks the crew to attention and watches them slowly take their places Comrades, I know we have been having troubles for weeks, but we can get through this! I will investigate this matter completely. We will find good fish again! * Dmitri cheers for the captain ***** * Ian_Chesterton is wandering around lost below decks * Ian_Chesterton avoided all the mutinous crowds above * Ian_Chesterton hears people coming down and nips down a corridor * Shostakov, the ship's cook, is singing very loudly deep within the bowels of the ship, with a very bad Russian accent. * Ian_Chesterton walks into the ship's galley Hello, anyone about? Got any borscht? * Shostakov tries to beat beets with his beater, but fails due to his malfunctioning tool. * Shostakov then notices Ian out of the corner of his eye. * Ian_Chesterton sees a man playing with a beater Oh, I didn't notice you zere. Hello there. Are you mutinying too? Oh, I didn't know ze crew was mutinying. Well, I wish they weren't. Did you know that your Russian accent is atrocious? [Dispensing with the Russian accent] Well, I'm not actually Russian... Ah. Figured. I'm British, but SHHHHH, don't tell those guys up there. You know, I am a little confused here. This is a Soviet ship, isn't it? What is a Brit doing on a Soviet ship? They haven't taken you prisoner or something, have they? Nah, I'm a spy... The guys who I work for suspect a lot when it comes to these Russkies. Ah. So the Cold War isn't over yet? Cold War...it's just beginning... * Cleanerov receives a secret signal from Ramichov's communication device... a summons ...or least it's the beginning of further developments... * Ian_Chesterton is disappointed * Ian_Chesterton was hoping more for the future * Cleanerov exits surreptitiously from the fish-cleaning area... So, do you have any idea why the fishing's so bad? And it isn't the fault of me or my friends. I've never seen so many mutations. The Soviets aren't testing nuclear weapons in the ocean, are they? Oh...those fish...It's these guys, themselves... Which guys? Sure, they don't want to admit...but they're Russians...blame everyone else... Ah. Hmmm....can you hand me those beets over there? * Ian_Chesterton hands the cook the beets ***** * Capt_Rafflesovich looks out over the disgruntled faces of the crew. We must continue to fish, while we work out what is causing this trouble. * Doc2 taps on the captain's shoulder. Excuse me, I was just wondering... * Capt_Rafflesovich turns. I thought I said these prisoners were supposed to be taken to the bridge!? How long did you say you've been catching fish like this? * First_Mate_Ivanova stands a bit to the side, watching intently Well, how long, Ivanova? 3 weeks? Almost 3 weeks, Sir. And perhaps if I could carry out a full examination... Why should I trust you? What qualifications do you have anyway? Well, who else have you got to trust? * Doc2 smiles disarmingly. * First_Mate_Ivanova is not charmed and slightly narrows her eyes * Doc2 pulls a wallet from his pocket. Let's see... * Dmitri also feels he can trust the scruffy little man, to his surprise * Doc2 unravels a long book of cards. * Capt_Rafflesovich gazes over the strange man's shoulder Ah, Mars-Venus run... No, erm... * Doc2 shuffles through the cards. * Capt_Rafflesovich looks at Ivanova in surprise There must be something... * First_Mate_Ivanova frowns and stares at the little man Stop this! How about this! * Capt_Rafflesovich knocks the wallet out of his hand! Oh dear! * Doc2 looks after the wallet sadly. * Doc2 looks back at the card in his hand. Will this do? * Doc2 hands the card to the captain. * Capt_Rafflesovich gazes at the card in his hand. Where did you get this? * Doc2 draws himself up to his full height. Lenin, of course! * First_Mate_Ivanova peers at the card * First_Mate_Ivanova faintly smiles for a second Lenin has been dead since 1925! You aren't older than 45 yourself! * Doc2 is momentarily lost, having forgotten the date. It was, ah, handed down from my father. * First_Mate_Ivanova furtively glances at the stairs to below Your father knew the great Lenin? Yes, they were great friends. Now, I just suggest you let me help you. I've never heard of Lenin having any English friends. But then, there are Comrades everywhere. Indeed, yes. Sir, permission to go below and check the prisoners. * Capt_Rafflesovich waves her on her way. * First_Mate_Ivanova salutes and heads off below What is your name, son of Lenin's friend? Smith. Yes, Doctor John Smith. Well, Doktor John Smith, let's see some fish. Yes, what a good idea. ***** * KGBRamichov pushes Grant into a small holding room * GrantMarkham enters the room and falls to the ground What do you want with me! I want you to admit you are a spy. I'm not a spy! Take care, comrade, we can make you confess. The weakling captain may believe you, but not I. * Cleanerov has answered Ramichov's secret summons and lurks in the shadows near the small room until the coast is clear. * First_Mate_Ivanova heads past the galley where she hears voices * First_Mate_Ivanova quietly enters the room and listens Confess? Why should I confess? I haven't done anything! How have you been poisoning the fish? Illegal dumping? We haven't been poisoning the fish! We only just arrived!! And is the Captain in league with you? We have never met the Captain before!! * First_Mate_Ivanova gazes at Ramichov, hiding her disdain If you can't stomach an interrogation, Ivanova, then leave. * First_Mate_Ivanova smiles faintly Don't patronize me Ramichov. You don't know me at all. * Cleanerov removes the fishcleaner's coat and hat and looks quite different underneath * Cleanerov leaves the clothing in the shadows, unseen, and steps out to join Ramichov So...vat is going here, Ramichov? Vee hav trouble getting confession? Ahh, Comrade Cleanerov. Vee kan help you... This young spy seems unwilling to confess. Vell, vell, perhaps if I show our friend some of my little toys he vill change hiss mind. * Cleanerov holds up a fishknife and pushes a button; the knife is replaced by a cattle prod attachment I'm not a spy!! I keep telling you that!! The Doctor, Ian and I are travellers!! * First_Mate_Ivanova gazes at Grant * First_Mate_Ivanova takes note of another stranger on board but says nothing Travellers? And you just happened to be aboard our ship...on the way to England?! * Cleanerov zaps Grant lightly Answer him! Yes, that's right...the Doctor was going to take us for a holiday!! Holiday! PAH! * First_Mate_Ivanova stares back at the KGB agent and sneers I'll leave you to your work. * First_Mate_Ivanova quietly slips out and heads back to the galley, suspecting who she will find But before you were going to sabotage this ship. * Cleanerov nods in assent My comrade has uncovered your fiendish plot! Vy not confess! We weren't going to sabotage your ship!! * KGBRamichov tightens Grant's bonds Oww!! * Cleanerov adds a zap from the prod If you confess, we will untie your hands... We weren't plotting anything!! We were going on a holiday!! Please let me go!! I've done nothing!! Bah, it's plain you lie with each breath! I'm not lying... Your friend the "Doctor" seemed to know quite a bit about the fish. * Cleanerov zaps Grant with a higher jolt Yess, tell us about zees "Doctor". The Doctor knows a lot about these things!! He's a scientist!! Bah - give up, Cleanerov, let us hang him. Ahhhhh, eef you inseest. * GrantMarkham begins to worry even more....hanging?? * Cleanerov strokes Grant under the chin with her cattle prod Such a shame...such a nice...neck. ***** * First_Mate_Ivanova pauses at the galley door and listens * Ian_Chesterton is drinking Russian tea and talking with the cook * First_Mate_Ivanova pushes open the door and slips in * First_Mate_Ivanova gazes questioningly at Shostakov * Shostakov notices Ivanova and jumps up * Ian_Chesterton turns to see the First Mate Dos Vedania * First_Mate_Ivanova looks Ian up and down What was that? * First_Mate_Ivanova smiles Sorry, I was trying my hand at Russian. Very poor accent, I think. Not as bad as Shosty here. Borscht anyvun? * Ian_Chesterton smiles and goes into the kitchen * First_Mate_Ivanova glances at Shostakov Shosty, is it? Actually, Shostakovich, but you can call me anything you want. That accent is still atrocious, Shost. I can't help it! Let's drop the pretense. Clearly our visitors have been sent from home. Well, Ian did tell me he was British, but that doesn't mean anything. * First_Mate_Ivanova calls after Ian So, who are you really? * Ian_Chesterton gets one of the fish and hands it to Ivanova * First_Mate_Ivanova takes the fish Can you explain this? * First_Mate_Ivanova shakes her head Radiation poisoning, I would guess. That's what I thought. * Shostakov looks at the fish. * First_Mate_Ivanova hands the fish to Shostakov Oh no...I'm not taking this fish. * Shostakov puts the fish in the sink So, ----Ian---, where are you from? Where's the radiation from? * First_Mate_Ivanova glances at Ian I think you need to answer some questions first. Who are you and your colleagues? You'd better speak. The KGB are having fun questioning your friend. We're just travellers. That's right, Ivanova, they're just travellers... We were on our way to England when our...ship capsized. We made our way here and hid out for awhile. Then the crew found us. * First_Mate_Ivanova muses Travellers...? Ahhh, is that your cover? That's the truth. * First_Mate_Ivanova smiles knowingly Of course it is. Ivanova, I don't understand how you couldn't believe him. * First_Mate_Ivanova raises brow at Shost Oh, did I say I didn't believe him? * First_Mate_Ivanova smiles at Ian, looking him up and down again Well, something must be done about your friend. The KGB don't believe him. * First_Mate_Ivanova looks at Ian Do you have any suggestions how we can help him? Just say something they might find useful, and believable. * First_Mate_Ivanova slowly circles Ian as she speaks * First_Mate_Ivanova stops behind Ian and breathes close to his ear Surely you can think of...something? Well, I think the Doctor is your only hope. He knows more about radiation poisioning that I'll ever know. I'm a chemistry teacher, not a geneticist. Does he really? Who is this Doctor, Ian? You didn't tell me about him... Yes, I told you about him. He's up on deck, probably. Is the Doctor the pilot of your craft? Yes - you could say that. * First_Mate_Ivanova digests this Well, I think we need to seek him out. What does this craft look like? Um, it's oblong and blue. * First_Mate_Ivanova grins Bigger than a bread box? As a matter of fact, it is. But I think rather than talking about the Doctor, I should see about rescuing Grant. * First_Mate_Ivanova glances at Shostakov Yes, of course. We will need to speak with the Captain...and the Doctor. Which way did you say they were holding him? * First_Mate_Ivanova shakes her head Not yet. The KGB won't listen just yet. We need to talk to the Doctor. Shall we? They won't kill him, will they? * Ian_Chesterton is worried about the boy * First_Mate_Ivanova averts her eyes No, that would cut short their fun. * Ian_Chesterton shivers at that statement * First_Mate_Ivanova steers Ian out of the galley to above deck ***** * Capt_Rafflesovich and the Doctor are bending over looking at the fish on the table * Doc2 pokes at the fish with a scalpel. * Capt_Rafflesovich is unimpressed with this little man's surgical skills! Hmmm, very interesting. What is? It is a fish! A bizarre-looking fish, but still a fish! * Doc2 cuts a line down the side of the fish. * Capt_Rafflesovich is beginning to wonder if trusting this man was such a good idea. * Capt_Rafflesovich knows the Doctor was right, though. He couldn't trust any of his own crew. Who knows who might be a KGB spy? * Doc2 opens up the fish. Oh, my... * Doc2 wraps a handkerchief over his nose. * Capt_Rafflesovich gags! Bolshe moi! It is a big one, isn't it, Captain. * Doc2 pokes around inside the fish. * First_Mate_Ivanova spots the Captain and the Doctor * First_Mate_Ivanova leads Ian over, trying to withstand the smell Yes, this looks very nasty. What could cause that? * Doc2 puts down the scapel and sticks his hands in his pockets. * First_Mate_Ivanova looks down at the fish Any number of things... Now, let me see... * Doc2 produces a radiation wave meter. Doctor - what is it? It appears...to be a somewhat mutated fish. Obviously! * Doc2 waves the meter over the fish. Yes, I thought as much! Look at these readings, Captain! What is it? and what is that AWFUL smell? * Capt_Rafflesovich gazes at the meter. This fish has been mutated by radioactive poisoning. That is high! How could that be? I suspect that there's a radiation leak somewhere... It may even be deliberate. Deliberate? * Capt_Rafflesovich is dumbfounded Yes, someone may be trying to poison the fishing. The Americans! Perhaps... You don't sound convinced! I think the source may be much closer. * Doc2 waves the wave meter around. * Ian_Chesterton decides to leave the bridge and look for Grant * Ian_Chesterton goes below deck again and heads opposite the galley * First_Mate_Ivanova sees Ian slip away and decides to follow We might have floated over a contaminated area. * Doc2 checks the readings. I think the source might even be on board this vessel! What? Why? The Americans must know our fishing routes. * Doc2 fiddles with the controls. They could poison the area, knowing we fish here! Why would they want to do that? * Doc2 frowns. To weaken us. Fish is one of our important foods during the winter months. * Capt_Rafflesovich is beginning to sound like a slogan, which always worries him. No, I shouldn't think they'd do that... * Doc2 looks worried. I think they'd do just about anything. * Doc2 looks dubious. Well, if you are right, where on board is this stuff coming from? We are not transporting any nuclear materials. * Capt_Rafflesovich thinks, "That I know of!" * Doc2 looks at the meter again. That's what we'll have to find out! With a little adjustment... * Doc2 fiddles with the device. We can trace the source of the radiation! Come on! * Capt_Rafflesovich is amazed at how quickly he has become reliant on this funny little man * Doc2 marches to the door, eyes fixed on the device. * Capt_Rafflesovich follows ***** * Ian_Chesterton hears voices down the corridor * Ian_Chesterton is outside the room where Grant is being held and listens at the door * Ian_Chesterton waits outside the room and hears the voices getting louder * Ian_Chesterton moves back out of the way of the opening door Cleanerov - get the men, we'll make an example of this one! * Cleanerov puts on her cape and hat and once again becomes a fishcleaner Let me go!! * KGBRamichov pushes Grant out and onto the deck * GrantMarkham is pushed out of the room and up the stairs to the deck What are you going to do to me!! * Ian_Chesterton slowly follows the group * First_Mate_Ivanova follows behind * Dmitri looks over from the latest load of fish in time to view the proceedings * Dmitri leaves the fish to air on the deck - not worth eating anyway - and moves to join the group Comrades! This man is a spy! He is the source of our problems! * GrantMarkham feebly cries "I am not!!" * Dmitri isn't sure he believes Ramichov, who has always been prone to overreacting * Cleanerov stands, prod in hand, watching the hanging proceed * Cleanerov disappears back up into the throng of fishcleaners * Cleanerov helps exhort the other cleaners to shout for hanging HANG HIM! * Ian_Chesterton sees what the group is about to do and gasps Let us teach these Westerners what we do to them! * Cleanerov and the crowd cheer! Comrades - don't listen to this barbarian! * Dmitri does not cheer * Dmitri looks at Ian instead Yes, don't listen to him!! * Shostakov silently slips onto the deck holding a frying pan. * KGBRamichov places a noose around Grant's neck * GrantMarkham feels the rope against his neck * Ian_Chesterton steps up to where Ramichov is Another spy! Another Englishman! Comrades - are you not civilized men? Don't you see that what this "comrade" is doing is barbaric? Even the Americans wouldn't stoop this low! * Dmitri nods * Cleanerov sees the crowd pressing towards Ian as well * Cleanerov holds back, observing, ready to bolt for safety at a moment's notice * First_Mate_Ivanova steps up to Ramichov and hisses in his ear You fool! These people are worth more alive than dead. Hah, you speak of barbarism, Englishman, when your own children starve! You should talk! We defended our motherland in the Great Patriotic War and we will defend her now! * Cleanerov and crowd cheer loudly! * Dmitri looks around at the others The Englishman is right! If we hang this man, we will be as bad as the others! * Dmitri moves over to where Ian is Bah, Dmitri, you are as weak as you look! * Ian_Chesterton has a boathook is his hand and uses it to try and free Grant's bonds Comrades, let us be rid of our problems now! Hang them both! Ramichov, do you have concrete evidence that this man is a spy? Watch out, Dmitri. We are friends, but I will cross you if I must. As will I. * GrantMarkham looks at Ian * Ian_Chesterton has freed Grant and faces Ramichov with the boathook * KGBRamichov's eyes widen! Look - I don't want to fight you. But I will if I have to. * KGBRamichov cracks open a evil laugh Is that the best you can do, decadent imperialist? * GrantMarkham notices he's been freed, and slowly sidles away from the action, looking for the Doctor * KGBRamichov is too intent on Ian to notice Grant I'll have you know I'm a socialist. Look, friend, let's just leave it at a draw. I really don't want to hurt you. * Dmitri pulls out his fish-cleaning knife Let him pass, Ramichov. Bah, you English Labour people are just as capitalistic as any other. And you think your communist leaders aren't capitalists? Why are they so much richer than the common man? They are loyal party members, as I am. * Doc2 walks into view, eyes fixed on the wave meter. I think it's this way, Captain. * Capt_Rafflesovich follows, looking interested but a bit baffled * First_Mate_Ivanova backs away from the action, keeping her eye on the Doctor * First_Mate_Ivanova follows behind at a distance * GrantMarkham, relieved, sees the Doctor Besides, why are we arguing politics when we should be looking for the cause of the dead fish? I am looking at the cause! You and your friends! Then look a little further - I am not the cause, and neither are they. * KGBRamichov pulls out his revolver Oh, but that doesn't matter. * Doc2 looks around, startled. * Capt_Rafflesovich looks up and sees the crowd. Oh dear... Ramichov! Chort votsmi! What's going on here! * Doc2 turns to the captain. I say, do you mind terribly getting them to release my companions? The men aren't happy with me as it is, but I will try, Doctor. * Doc2 fumbles with the device and frowns at it. * Dmitri sticks the point of the knife into Ramichov's back Put the gun *away*. Dmitri, what is going on? * KGBRamichov elbows Dmitri; his KGB training sends Dmitri falling I don't know, but Ramicho - aah! Ramichov! * Dmitri falls to the ground, the knife clattering away Foolish Dmitri, always the emotional one. * Ian_Chesterton gets away from Ramichov and heads for the Doctor Ramichov! I've warned you before! * GrantMarkham sees a hatch, quickly opens it and moves inside... Doctor - have you found out what's killing the fish? I think it's radiation, Ian. * Dmitri slowly sits up, very winded * Shostakov has been sulking in the background; he's had enough of this talk. He sneaks up behind Cleanerov...CLANG! * Cleanerov drops to the floor, unconcious * Dmitri is surprised Good move, tavarisch. Captain, I confiscate this ship on orders of the KGB! By WHAT? * Capt_Rafflesovich helps Dimitri up, not taking his eyes off Ramichov Spasiba, captain. But where is the radiation coming from? * Doc2 waves the acme radiation wave meter That's what I was trying to find out. I am an agent, Captain, sent here to make sure something remains concealed. What remains concealed? * Capt_Rafflesovich snarls That, Captain, is classified information. You will now take orders from me. Classified information! Bah! I order you to take these three Englishmen to a holding cell immediately. * Dmitri's eyes flicker to where his knife lies Then we will radio the Submarine Katarina to come by. You order me? My family has been in the politburo since the Revolution! * First_Mate_Ivanova continues spying from a distance That may be, Captain, but the KGB does not pay heed to "family connections". * Dmitri takes a deep breath and dives for the knife Why not, Ramichov? That is how you got your position, isn't it? You...have...your...orders! * Doc2 thinks if he carried an umbrella, he could trip people up with it to stop them fighting. * Dmitri snatches the instrument by the dull side of the blade Your father is the head of the Stalingrad region KGB. Isn't that right? My family is no concern of yours, Captain. I have my orders. * Dmitri takes aim to throw the knife, hoping his arm is steady You will obey, or I will shoot you. * Shostakov goes over to the Doctor and whispers I have a pan and I'm not afraid to use it... * Doc2 quietly suggests Shostakov incapacitate Ramichov. * KGBRamichov raises his pistol to shoot the Captain * Capt_Rafflesovich thinks bitterly how usual that sort of intimidation is for the KGB Well, Captain? * Dmitri takes a deep breath * Dmitri hurls his arm forward, releasing the knife * KGBRamichov pulls the trigger * Doc2 "oh dears" and takes cover. * Capt_Rafflesovich dives to avoid the shot * Shostakov runs behind Ramichov as he fires the shot, but misses...DARN! * TheKnife barely grazes Ramichov's arm * KGBRamichov fires as he is cut * KGBRamichov goes down with the injury * Dmitri lets out a sigh of relief - he didn't think his aim was that good * Doc2 wonders what Grant is doing. ***** * GrantMarkham sneaks down the corridor... hatches on either side of him... * GrantMarkham idly tries a hatch... locked * GrantMarkham, remembering what he did on Agora, picks the lock on the hatch * GrantMarkham opens the previously locked hatch and steps inside the cabin * GrantMarkham notices a bench with some files on it. Curious, he takes a look at them * GrantMarkham reads the files.... Nikolai Ramichov... KGB Keptain * GrantMarkham realises that this is important, and quickly rushes back to the deck with the file * GrantMarkham returns to the deck and tries to get the Doctor's attention... * GrantMarkham sneaks up near the Doctor and hands him the file folder... Doctor, I found this in Ramichov's cabin. * Doc2 looks at the folder. * Doc2 rifles through the folder. * Capt_Rafflesovich looks up from his prone position, at Ramichov Damn you, Captain! The state will get you for this! * Capt_Rafflesovich grins. He doesn't like the KGB. * KGBRamichov cluthes his bleeding arm Captain, you might find this interesting... * Capt_Rafflesovich gets up and accepts the file. As he reads it, his eyes grow round Yes, I thought you might say that. I don't believe this! It was going on my ship all this time! Our friend here appears to be the one behind the radiation. * Dmitri looks over at the captain, the scruffy man and his friends * Capt_Rafflesovich turns to Ramichov That's right, Captain, but now you know too much. Some things the state does not wish its citizens to know. Too bad for you. * KGBRamichov raises the gun to the Captain No! * Shostakov notices that Ramichov is about to fire his gun with his other hand Oh no you don't! * Shostakov hits Ramichov with the frying pan * Ian_Chesterton rushes Ramichov * Ian_Chesterton knocks him over as the gun goes off * Dmitri breathes another sigh of relief as Ramichov falls down a second time * KGBRamichov is now out * Ian_Chesterton pins him down with the boathook * Capt_Rafflesovich joins them, taking Ramichov's gun from his hand. Well done, everyone! Let's get this mutineer into the brig! We'll need to find the source, but that is probably listed in here. * Capt_Rafflesovich indicates the file. * Doc2 gestures at Ian to slip away. * Doc2 sidles away from the scene. * Ian_Chesterton disentangles himself and follows the Doctor to the TARDIS * GrantMarkham looks at the Doctor, and heads back to the TARDIS * GrantMarkham reaches the TARDIS first, and waits for the Doctor and Ian... * Doc2 arrives at the TARDIS and unlocks the door. * Ian_Chesterton follows the Doctor in * GrantMarkham enters the TARDIS after the Doctor and Ian Let's get this Suna Sutki under guard! * First_Mate_Ivanova steps out from where she has been lurking in the shadows * Shostakov is so happy. He jumps around and pushes Ivanova overboard accidentally. * First_Mate_Ivanova falls screaming into the raging sea Ooops...sorry Ivanova... Ivanova! * Capt_Rafflesovich rushes, with his crew, to the rail, but there is nothing they can do. * First_Mate_Ivanova bobs up once....twice...and then disappears * Capt_Rafflesovich organizes his people to get to work. He barely even notices the Doctor is gone. * KGBRamichov groans * Capt_Rafflesovich helps his crew to carry Ramichov to the cells. They are not particularly gentle about it. So, will they get this mess sorted out okay, Doctor? I for one, certainly hope so.... Oh, I should think so. The files detail the location of the radiation leak. What about the radiation poisoning that the crew has gotten? * Doc2 humphs. Well, I'll sweep the boat with anti-radiation waves before we leave... That should do it nicely. * Doc2 vwips around with the console. * Ian_Chesterton nods his head as if he understands, then goes over to the fornicator to see if the ship is working properly * Shostakov addresses the crew So, anyone want some borscht? * Capt_Rafflesovich and his crew feel a bit queasy as the anti-radiation waves sweep the ship. Then everything is back to normal... including the fish! Oh wow...I can also make fish-head soup! And what was this leak, anyway? How did it get on the ship in the first place? According to the files Grant found, the radiation was a small plutonium sample. * GrantMarkham only has one question... Doctor, can we go to England now, and finally have that holiday? Yes, let's go to England, shall we? * Doc2 triggers the demat sequence. * Shostakov notices the TARDIS dematerialize and waves goodbye. ::the end!::
